Arizona Addiction Treatment Statistics

There were 18,572 people admitted into drug and alcohol rehabs in Arizona during 2010. There were 60.8 % male and 39.2% female. There were 212 alcohol and drug addiction treatment facilities in 2006. Of that number, there were 53 drug and alcohol facilities that offered residential care and 29 rehabs that offered opiate treatment.

Since the mid 1990s, the number of admissions for alcohol abuse has dropped slightly; however, during that same time the number of drug-only admissions has increased from 15 % in 1998 to 27% in 2005. For most drugs and alcohol, Arizona has remained below the drug and alcohol abuse average since 2003. However, among 12-17 year olds, use of marijuana has been among the top ten states including cocaine abuse for the same demographic.

Binge drinking among those 25-34 increased almost 10 percentage points between 2006 and 2008.

Over the last 11 years, there has been a steady increase in the number of admissions citing methamphetamines as a drug of abuse.

Alcohol Addiction in Arizona

In an Arizona Substance Epidemiology Profile for 2009, it was found that “binge drinking among those 25-34 increased almost 10 percentage points between 2006 and 2008.”  There were 3,974 people who went to addiction treatment for alcohol only and an additional 2,229 who went for alcohol  combined with a secondary drug.

Commonly Abused Drugs in Arizona

Drug abuse is a national epidemic and the numbers are continuing to rise. Heroin is becoming the cheaper replacement for opiates as states continue to crack down on the “pill mills” making the cost of opiates too expensive.

Cocaine
445 people went to drug rehab for smoking cocaine while another 344 went for ingesting cocaine by other means in 2010.

Heroin
There were 2,492 people who went to substance abuse treatment for heroin abuse in 2010. 30% of 21-25 year olds used and abused heroin and entered treatment.

Marijuana
In 2010, there were 2,773 people who went to drug treatment for marijuana dependence. 29.3% of these people were between the ages of 21-25 years of age.

Methamphetamines
2,824 people went to substance abuse treatment for amphetamines, 45.4% were male and 54.6% were female. 26-30 year olds were the largest population of those admitted for amphetamines.

Prescription Drugs
There was a reported 2,399 people who were using “other/unknown” drugs in 2010 according to Treatment Episode Data Set (TEDS).

Arizona Drug and Alcohol Fatalities, Injuries and Drug Court Statistics

981 people died in 2007 as a direct result of drug use compared to 1,104 people who died from motor vehicle accidents and 951 people who died as a result of firearms incidents in the same year. From 2000 to 2007, the rate of alcohol induced fatalities has almost doubled. Between 2001 and 2010 marijuana seizures have been steadily increasing.

From 2004 to 2009, meth seizures had begun to decline, however, since 2009 that figure has started to climb again according to the National Seizure System Jan 2011 report. During the same period, cocaine has dropped, climbed drastically, gradually dropped and is leveling off.

42% of all marijuana seizures in the southwestern border of the U.S. 56% of cocaine and 42% of heroin were all seized in Arizona. In 2008, there was a 90% increase in the amount of heroin seized in Arizona.

In 2000, 6.5 deaths per 100,000 were drug induced, however, by 2007, that number had grown to 18.3 deaths per 100,000.
