In 2009, there were 6,568 people who went to alcohol and drug rehab in Idaho; 64.1% of this population was male and 35.8% was female.

Rates of past year alcohol abuse or dependence in Idaho have varied considerably among the four age groups and across survey years; however, the rates for individuals age 12 to 17 have consistently ranked among the highest in the country.

According to the 2006 National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services (N-SSATS), the number of treatment facilities in Idaho was 57. Approximately 8% of Idaho residents reported past-month use of illicit drugs; the national average was 8%.

Alcohol Addiction in Idaho

1,640 people went to treatment for alcohol abuse in 2009 and an additional 951 people entered treatment for alcohol combined with a secondary drug.

Marijuana is the most commonly cited drug among primary drug rehab admissions in Idaho according to the data from 2009. In 2009, there were 1,804 individuals who went to treatment for marijuana dependence. 74% of these people were male and 25.9% were female, with the highest population of people admitted into treatment being 12-17 year olds at 42.5%.

There were 1,496 people who entered rehab for amphetamine addiction in 2009. 50.3% of were male and 49.7% were female and the majority of this population was people 26-30 years of age.

As a direct consequence of drug use, 133 persons died in Idaho in 2007. This figure is compared to the number of persons in Idaho who died from motor vehicle accidents (273) and firearms (187) in the same year.
