Breaking Bad and Crystal Meth
Breaking Bad portrays the dangerous side of Meth

I was one of the thousands that tuned into the season premiere of the popular television show, Breaking Bad. The TV show has given viewers an inside look at the dangers of the drug world (usually taboo) and the destruction and deadly consequences of using drugs. This show portrays the ugly reality of what crystal meth is and how it destroys all of those around it.

Crystal meth, which fuels the drama in the show, is a drug that causes many problems for the characters in the show as well as thousands of people in real life. In fact, 1.2 million Americans over the age of 12 abused crystal meth in 2009. In Season 4 we see Jesse Pinkman’s house filled to the brim with meth users. This shows us just a fraction of the amount of meth addicts in America today. We have seen Walt and Jesse cook up some meth in the iconic scene in season 1, in which their mobile lab explodes. You often hear or read about in the news that a meth lab ‘exploded’. This is because of all the dangerous toxic chemicals that are used to make the drug. The deadly cocktail that makes up crystal meth can cause:

  • Brain damage
  • “Meth Mouth” (tooth decay and gum disease as a result of meth use)
  • Paranoia, hallucinations, delusions, tension headache
  • Muscle breakdown which can lead to kidney damage or failure
  • Death due to stroke, cardiac arrest or elevated body temperature

Breaking Bad has opened many peoples’ eyes to the dangers of crystal meth. If you know someone that may have crystal meth addiction, they will need to go to drug rehab to overcome their addiction. To learn and discuss more about crystal meth, join us on Facebook.
