Classification of Drugs

Alcohol
Alcohol lies in the depressant classification of drugs that also affects a number of neurotransmitters in the brain interrupting normal brain to body communications. Alcohol is highly addictive and withdrawal symptoms can be dangerous if left unmonitored and untreated.

Barbiturates
Barbiturates are an older class of central nervous system suppressants. They are used as hypnotics, anesthetics and anticonvulsants. Abusing barbiturates can happen rapidly requiring medical detox and addiction treatment.

Benzodiazepines
When used as prescribed, benzodiazepines can improve the quality of life for many people who suffer from certain psychiatric and medical conditions. However, benzodiazepines are addictive and abusing them is dangerous.

Hallucinogens
Hallucinogens are plant-derived or manmade drugs that alter sensory perception and sense of self and others. They are either illegal substances, or substances that have been developed for use as anesthetic agents.

Inhalants
Inhalants are chemicals found in a variety of household products, medical supplies and medications, and industrial cleaners, solvents, and fuels. Indeed, they number in the thousands. They are extremely dangerous both to adults and adolescents.

Opiates
Opiates and opioids are powerful narcotics that alter the regulation of the central nervous system and the gastrointestinal tract. Opiates are used by medical professionals to treat mild to severe pain, cough, and as anesthetics. They are highly addictive and there use is always accompanied by side effects.

Stimulants
Stimulants can increase energy and alertness initially, but as with other drugs, the abuse of these drugs can bring upon unwanted personality changes, psychosis and serious health complications.
