According to the Substance Abuse Treatment Episode Data Set, 2,478 people entered treatment for both alcohol and drug addiction treatment in 2010. 61.5% of that number were males and 38.5% were females.

Across the last 15 years of data reporting, there has been a steady decline in the number of admissions mentioning alcohol as the primary substance of abuse, and increases in the mention of both marijuana and methamphetamine.

According to the National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services (N-SSATS), the number of drug and alcohol rehabs in North Dakota has increased from 47 in 2002 to 65 in 2006.

In 2010, 871 people entered treatment for alcohol only treatment with an additional 562 people who suffered from alcohol abuse combined with a secondary drug.

Commonly Abused Drugs in North Dakota

Marijuana is the most commonly cited drug among primary drug treatment admissions in North Dakota. There were 696 people who went to drug and alcohol rehabs for marijuana addiction, 65.9% were male and 33.6% were female. The largest age group of individuals who went to treatment for this addiction was 12-17 year olds.

145 people went to substance abuse treatment for amphetamines in 2010. 44.1% were male and 55.9% were female while the largest group of people admitted was between 21-25 years old.

North Dakota Drug and Alcohol Fatalities, Injuries and Drug Court Statistics

As a direct consequence of drug use, 37 persons died in North Dakota in 2007. This is compared to the number of persons in North Dakota who died from motor vehicle accidents (115) and firearm (57) incidents in the same year.

Drug-induced deaths in North Dakota are less than half the national rate.
