Pompano Beach Pain Clinic Raid Echoes National Problem
Prescription drug abuse has been on the rise in the United States for a number of years. Residents of Pompano Beach, FL were recently reminded that the issue is very close to home when a local pain clinic, or “pill mill”, was busted by Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies and the SWAT team.
The morning of June 12th, after a year of investigation, officers raided the clinic while there were over 20 customers inside, removing them in handcuffs and beginning their search for evidence. According to CBS Miami, the Pompano Beach, FL pain clinic has been operating for two to three years and may have ties to organized crime. The investigation is far from over, but the two owners of the pain clinic have been arrested on 14 charges including money laundering, racketeering, unlawful distribution of prescription drugs and trafficking oxycodone.
A recent crackdown on pain clinics across the country has led to many raids, like the Pompano Beach one, and highlights a national problem with prescription drugs. Pain clinics give out questionable or illegal prescriptions for narcotics, such as OxyContin, causing customers who may start out with legitimate medical needs to end up with a dangerous and sometimes lethal addiction. Prescription drug abuse has serious physical and psychological implications. If your or a loved one’s prescription drug use is out of control, consider addiction treatment at a drug rehabilitation facility. It could save your life.
