Indiana Addiction Treatment Statistics

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration reported that 24,054 people were admitted for alcohol and drug addiction treatment in 2010.

There were approximately 290 treatment facilities in Indiana during 2009. 156 facilities provided a mix of mental health and substance abuse treatment services.

Of all those admitted for drug or alcohol abuse in Indiana during 2010, men comprised 64.5 % of the total, while women comprised 35.5%.

Alcohol Addiction in Indiana

In 2010, there were 4,064 people admitted to treatment for alcohol abuse as the primary drug and 4,931 people admitted with alcohol addiction combined with a secondary substance.

Commonly Abused Drugs in Indiana

The Office of National Drug Control Policy’s 2008 report indicated that prescription drugs are the second most commonly abused substance following marijuana.

This shift seems to be a result of a false perception that marijuana use is harmless. This perception is closely aligned with the move to legalize its use for medical purposes.

Marijuana
Marijuana was most commonly cited as the primary drug of choice for those entering drug treatment facilities in Indiana. In 2010, there were 5,121 people admitted for treatment of marijuana addiction. Marijuana was ranked first in the state for the most available and most abused substance in 2010.
 
Heroin
Heroin use has been steadily increasing for the past decade. In 2010, 1,276 people went to drug rehab for heroin addiction. The number of people using heroin in certain cities in the state has increased 300% in the last three years according to a 2011 news report.
 
Cocaine
Among those who were admitted for cocaine dependence, the largest demographic was between ages 41-45 years of age, with a fairly equal split between men and women using cocaine.
 
Prescription Drugs
There were 2,183 individuals who entered treatment for opiates other than heroin, the majority or 50.7% of prescription drug admissions were women. Prescription drug abuse is on the rise. In 2007, a report by SAMHSA illustrated that the largest group of abusers for nonmedical use of pain relievers was among the 18-25 year olds followed by 26-30 year olds. Use of OxyContin rose from 29 million dosages in 2002 to 54 million in 2007.

Indiana Drug and Alcohol Fatalities, Injuries and Drug Court Statistics

Drug related deaths were higher in Indiana than the national average. The number of people who died from drug use in 2007-2008 was 827 compared to those who died in motor vehicle accidents which was 942. There were 28 drug courts in Indiana as of 2007, 25 adult drug courts and 3 courts for juveniles. The national average age, and indeed the average age for Indiana participants in adult drug court is between the ages of 31-33 years.

Methamphetamine lab seizures by law enforcement agencies recorded an increase of incidents from 803 incidents in 2007 to 1,231 incidents in 2009. The number of arrests for possession of Barbiturates, Benzedrine and other drugs rose from 1,688 in 2003 to 2,720 in 2007.

Alcohol impaired driving fatalities number 210 in 2009. However, there were 22,618 people arrested in Indiana for driving while intoxicated and an additional 16,936 people arrested for drunkenness.
