New York Addiction Treatment Statistics

In 2014, the leading governmental agency on substance abuse, SAMHSA, reported a total of 281,780 admissions into New York alcohol and drug rehabilitation centers. Of that number, 73.3% were male, and 26.7% were female.

Alcohol Addiction in New York

According to and Behavioral Health Barometers NSDUH (SAMHSA ) in the years 2012-2013, New York's percentage of alcohol dependence among individuals 12 and older was about the same as the national average - 6.65% or approximately 1.1 million individuals.

50,393 individuals were admitted to treatment for alcohol abuse while another 59,864 users sought treatment for alcohol with a secondary drug addiction.

During 2009-2013, only 5.3% of individuals over 12 years of age suffering from alcohol dependence and abuse received treatment.

Commonly Abused Drugs in New York

Between 2012-2013, 462,000 individuals or 2.8% of those over 12 were dependent upon illicit drugs. Of that number, only 12.8% suffering from illicit drug dependence/abuse received treatment.

Cocaine, heroin, and marijuana continued to dominate the drug scene. An increase and consequence of opiate analgesics was measured.

In New York, 14,770 individuals were admitted for treatment of smoked cocaine abuse. An additional 8,461 users entered treatment for cocaine abuse through other routes.

In 2010, heroin was the most commonly cited drug among drug users admitted for drug treatment in New York. During 2014, the number of individuals admitted for heroin abuse was 79,295

The 2014 NSSATS report revealed that 42,289 people entered drug treatment for marijuana addiction. During the July 2014 legislative session, a Compassionate Care Act was passed to allow for a medical marijuana program. The program has yet to be fully implemented.

The greatest number of prescription drug treatment admissions occurred under Opiate use other than heroin. In 2014, 18,405 people were admitted for treatment in this category. The number of people admitted for all prescription drugs numbered 25,000 plus.

Criminal Justice and Substance Abuse Disorder in New York

According to the New York Department of Health's 2012 report on mental illness and substance use disorders in New York City alone, 42% of individuals in jail have a substance use disorder and 33% have a serious mental illness with 50% having a co-occurring substance abuse disorder.

The New York State Department of Correctional Services (2010) reported that 83% of the State's prison populations were in need of substance abuse treatment.

New York Drug and Alcohol Fatalities and Injuries

In the 2009 ONDCP report (from the Office of the President) on New York State, 1797 persons died as a consequence of drug use. That figure compares to 1,265 people who died from motor vehicle accidents.

New York State's 2014 Department of Motor Vehicles Summary of Alcohol-Related Motor Vehicle Crashes illustrates the problem of drinking and driving. There were 10,623 drivers involved in automobile crashes. Of that number 7,465 had been drinking. Fatalities among drinking drivers numbered 152 out of 163 individuals.
