Inderal (propranolol)
Inderal (propranolol)
Inderal was the first beta blocker used to treat hypertension, angina and tremors. Beta blockers act upon both heart activity and circulation, the flow of blood through arteries and veins.
What is Inderal?
Inderal can decrease the heart rate and relieve some of the more physiological signs and symptoms of anxiety, including palpitations and shakes. This medication works better on the neurotransmitters in the peripheral nervous system. It is in this way that beta blockers differ from SSRIs, which work on the central nervous system. As a beta blocker, Inderal relaxes the blood vessels, slows the heart rate and improves blood flow.
Uses of Inderal
Inderal is used to treat high blood pressure, heart pain, abnormal heart rhythms, glandular tumors near the kidneys and essential tremors. It is also given to people who have experienced a heart attack because of its ability to open blood vessels. Inderal is used for the treatment of alcohol withdrawal symptoms and anxiety in a drug rehab facility for addiction treatment.
Side Effects of Using Inderal
The ability of Inderal to cross the blood barrier of the brain makes it a non-specific beta blocker as it can attach to different receptors, influencing both the B1 and B2 beta receptors. It can cause central nervous system (CNS) side effects including:
- Hallucinations
- Nightmares
- Depression
Inderal can also cause:
- Dizziness
- Sleep disruption
- Fatigue
- Indigestion
- Diarrhea
- Fogginess
Severe reactions to Inderal can include:
- Chest pain
- Dilated neck veins
- Swelling of the face and extremities
- Weight gain
- Blistering
- Joint pain
It should be noted that when Inderal is taken with alcohol or other CNS depressants, its side effects will increase, creating a dangerous physical condition. Inderal is labeled as having a high negative risk for patients if prescribed and used incorrectly in dosages, as there is a great difference between oral and I.V. dosage.
