Surviving Memorial Day Weekend
Surviving Memorial Day Weekend
Memorial Day is a day that commemorates all the men and women who have died while bravely serving our country. Typically, people enjoy this extended weekend by enjoying delicious food and a cold beverage with friends and family. However, for some this is a dangerous time. 17.6 million people have a problem with alcohol abuse or dependency. Many alcoholics struggle during holidays as it can trigger their drinking habit, and this Memorial Day weekend will not be any different.
It is dangerous to drink during the holidays. Dr. Curtis Rimmerman, a cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic, warns that binge drinking and overloading on holiday treats and meals with high sodium content can trigger abnormal heart rhythms. This condition is coined “holiday heart syndrome” and can require emergency medical care.
Drinking an excessive amount of alcohol can lead to alcohol poisoning. When a person has alcohol poisoning, their alcohol blood level is so high that it can prevent certain bodily functions to work properly such as breathing and gag reflex. If these functions do not work properly, an addict can choke on their vomit or asphyxiate.
Another danger during the holidays is surviving on the road. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 32% of all traffic fatalities are caused by drunk drivers. This number increases to more than 40% during the holidays as more drunk drivers take to the road.
Holidays can be enjoyed without alcohol. Those that feel they can not do so may have an alcohol addiction. Alcohol addiction is a disease that requires professional treatment at an
alcohol rehab center. Receiving treatment for alcoholism can help save your life so you can enjoy another holiday.
