What Keeps You Sober?
What Keeps You Sober?
After going to rehab, you need to find something that will help you keep focused and balanced. Many people rely on AA meetings to help them keep in check. If they feel like they are slipping, they can rely on the fellowship. Although this is a popular option, this is not the only option. Many people turn to other things to keep help them focus on recovery.
For journalist Caleb Daniloff, the feelings he had covered for so many years amplified when he quit drinking. His shyness and self-doubt grew to panic and self-hate. He knew he had to do something to confront these feelings. Instead of returning to AA like he had in the past, he decided to try something new: running. He has run in six marathons and four half-marathons. He has faced his demons by running through the places he used to drink and do drugs.
Running has not become an addiction but rather therapy and religion. Running filled the hole in him and gave him an outlet to handle his cravings for alcohol. Approaching underlying feelings with healthier coping skills can help you stay on track of recovery. These coping skills and resources are personal, so don’t be discouraged if something doesn’t work for you. Whether you go to meetings, run, meditate, etc,, the important thing is that you find the right outlet for you. .
