What is Dilantin?

Dilantin is considered an anticonvulsant medication. It works on the cells and nerves in the brain that are suffering from being over stimulated. It does this by reducing transmissions from one cell to another. By slowing the electric activity in the brain, Dilantin can stop the onset of certain types of seizures. It was originally approved in 1939.

Uses for Dilantin

Dilantin is an anticonvulsant most often used for those who suffer from bipolar disorder and epilepsy. However, if an individual has an alcohol withdrawal seizure or an epileptic seizure related to alcohol withdrawal, Dilantin may be prescribed in drug rehab facilities during the alcohol detox process. It may also be prescribed in drug rehab for other issues such as alcohol related mood changes. Dilantin, as with other anticonvulsants, is often used as a mood stabilizer.

Withdrawal

Abrupt cessation of the drug can bring on seizures.
