Tegretol (carbamazepine)
Tegretol is used to treat certain types of seizures. It is also used to relieve pain and some symptoms of bipolar disorder.
What is Tegretol?
Tegretol is the brand name for carbamazepine, an anticonvulsant drug used to treat seizures, bipolar disorder, trigeminal neuralgia and a variety of other mood disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It also has a variety of off-label uses when used in drug rehab centers.
Uses of Tegretol
This drug is prescribed to help reduce symptoms of anxiety. It acts on the brain by reducing abnormal electrical activity. It is prescribed to help control mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is used in drug rehab facilities to treat drug and alcohol withdrawal symptoms especially treatment for benzodiazepine withdrawal. Restless leg syndrome, diabetes and pain syndromes can all be treated with Tegretol. For patients who abuse Xanax, Ativan and Klonopin, Tegretol relieves the substance induced anxiety associated with benzodiazepine addiction. It is also used in combination with other drugs to treat certain seizures. Benzodiazepine withdrawal can be dangerous and is generally treated in a drug rehab program. Tegretol is often prescribed in drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers for dual diagnosis treatment.

- Back pain
- Unsteadiness
- Memory problems

- Diarrhea
- Constipation
Some people suffer a serious allergic reaction to this drug known as Stevens-Johnson syndrome. This syndrome is found mostly in people of Asian descent. Symptoms of Stevens-Johnson syndrome include rashes, blisters and fever. It is recommended that individuals taking Tegretol have periodic blood tests to check liver function and blood cell levels.
Withdrawal Symptoms from Tegretol
It is strongly recommended that individuals do not abruptly stop taking Tegretol. Withdrawal symptoms as well as a worsening of side effects can take place if abrupt stopping occurs. Withdrawal symptoms include:
- Numbness in limbs
- Tingling
- Joint aches
- Insomnia
- Shaking
- Anxiety
- Weight loss
- Seizures
