What is Vistaril?




Vistaril (hydroxyzine) is a non-addictive antihistamine medication. This drug is used to relieve the itching caused by allergies and to control the nausea and vomiting caused by various conditions, including motion sickness. It is also used for anxiety and to treat the symptoms of alcohol detox and withdrawal.

Uses of Vistaril

Vistaril is an antihistamine that is most often used to treat allergies, itchiness and vomiting. This drug has been used to treat anxiety and alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Vistaril is used for patients in the medication treatment of marijuana withdrawal feel calmer and sleep better until symptoms pass, thus helping return balance to the brain’s neurotransmitters. This drug is also used to alleviate cocaine withdrawal symptoms and other stimulants. Vistaril is not considered to be addictive in the same way that narcotics are and is generally safe for use by people with a substance use disorders. It is often prescribed in drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers for anxiety and as a sleep aid.

Vistaril has also been used in patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease to treat stiffness and tremors.

Side Effects of Vistaril

Vistaril should never be taken with alcohol or other CNS depressants as the antihistamine will add to the side effects of other drugs. For example, some tranquilizers or sedatives slow the heart rate and breathing and Vistaril will increase those effects. Other side effects of Vistaril may be:

  • Dry mouth
  • Drowsiness
  • Abdominal pain
  • Chills
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Redness of skin
  • Shortness of breath
  • Weakness

There are no significant withdrawal symptoms from Vistaril, but this drug should not be taken with alcohol, other sedatives, antidepressants or muscle relaxants as these drugs can worsen its side effects.
