Finally, legislation has been passed banning bath salts nationwide. U.S. Senator Chris Coons states in an ABC news article, “Dangerous drugs like bath salts are terrorizing our communities and destroying lives.  Stricter measures must be taken to stem the growing prevalence of bath salts and other new designer drugs.” The massive attention about bath salt intoxication comes only after a homeless man had his face eaten off by an individual suspected to be under the influence of bath salts in Miami, Florida. After this so-called “zombie attack,” that took place two weeks ago, more and more stories have been surfacing about the consequences of bath salt intoxication.

CNN news produced a video depicting an addict named Freddy Sharp who was intoxicated with bath salts. He was visibly agitated responding to hallucinations while having violent jerking behavior. Doctors report that Sharp said he was being possessed by Jason Voorhees, the character from the Friday the 13th movies. The vivid description of what he felt like is eerie. Sharp states, “It felt so evil. It felt like the darkest, evilest thing imaginable.” It is amazing that people are ingesting poison which is inducing psychotic-like features which is also causing people to go against the natural order of human nature.

Two years ago CBS reported that a 21-year-old man in Louisiana slashed his own throat after ingesting bath salts. He was able to receive care and have the wound stitched up by doctors, but soon after the incident, he committed suicide. In April of 2011, another incident involving a U.S. Army medic who allegedly shot his wife and child before committing suicide was proven to have bath salts in his system at the time.

It seems that bath salts may leave permanent damage psychologically and is hard to cope with the consequences. For the past 3 years there has been a steady stream of allegations surrounding the harm when ingesting bath salts; however, it is truly sad that it took cannibalism to have a lawful action against this synthetic drug.
