Iowa Addiction Treatment Statistics

According to the Substance Abuse Treatment Episode Data Set, 27,843 people entered treatment for both alcohol and drug addiction treatment in 2009.  68.6 % of that number were males and 31.4% were females.

In 2006 there were 125 drug and alcohol rehabs, of which 28 offered residential treatment while 4 offered opioid treatment. The number of people entering drug and alcohol treatment in Iowa for drug-only addiction has increased from 6% in 1992 to 23 % in 2006. Iowa continues to rank among the lowest among states with unmet treatment needs for all population groups.

Alcohol Addiction in Iowa

  • In 2009, Iowa ranked among 10 states with the highest rates of binge drinking within the past month in two age categories, 12-20 and 26 and older.
  • The number of people entering treatment for both alcohol as the primary abused substance and alcohol combined with a secondary drug has increased from 2007.
  • In 2009, 8,668 people entered treatment for alcohol only with an additional 6,384 people who suffered from alcohol abuse combined with a secondary drug.

Iowa ranked among the 10 states with the lowest percentage of 12-17 year olds abusing drugs.

The number of people who went to treatment for cocaine abuse of all forms (smoking, snorting, shooting etc.) has decreased over the last several years. In 2009, 1,094 people entered treatment for crack/ cocaine abuse.

Iowa was among the 10 states with the lowest rates of marijuana abuse among age groups 12-17. In 2009, 7,273 people entered drug treatment for marijuana dependence, with the majority of those admissions being males. Despite Iowa having one of the lowest rates of teens entering treatment for marijuana abuse, 23.5 % of those who entered treatment were 12-17 years of age.

Stimulants abuse (including methamphetamine) ranked second among those drugs most commonly abused by those entering treatment in 2010. There were 2,950 individuals who entered treatment for amphetamine abuse in 2009 with a few hundred more admitted for other drugs such as LSD, hallucinogens, tranquilizers etc.
 

Iowa Drug and Alcohol Fatalities, Injuries and Drug Court Statistics

The number of meth lab seizures rose from 181 incidents in 2007 to 267 seizures in 2009. The number of meth lab seizures has been significantly reduced from 2004 when a total of 1,437 incidents occurred.

According to the Office of National Drug Use Policy, 211 people died as a direct consequence of drug use compared with 459 individuals who died from motor vehicle accidents and 157 from firearms.
