Minnesota Addiction Treatment Statistics

Since 2002, the number of alcohol and drug addiction treatment facilities in Minnesota has remained stable. In 2007, there were 263 drug and alcohol addiction rehabilitation centers.

There were 50,830 people who entered substance abuse treatment programs in 2010. Of that number, 66.8 % of all admissions were male and 33.2 % were female.

Alcohol Addiction in Minnesota

Minnesota ranked among those states with the highest unmet treatment needs for individuals suffering from alcoholism. There were 12,099 individuals who entered treatment for alcohol as the primary drug of abuse. Another 9,463 people in alcohol and drug rehabs reported that alcohol combined with a secondary drug were their most commonly abused substances. In 2006, binge drinking among adult males was double that of adult females.

Commonly Abused Drugs in Minnesota

Drug abuse is a national epidemic and the numbers are continuing to rise. Heroin is becoming the cheaper replacement for opiates as states continue to crack down on the “pill mills” making the cost of opiates too expensive.

In 2010, 2,191 people entered treatment and were admitted to treatment for cocaine abuse. This figure is down from 4,816 people admitted for treatment in 2007.

The number of people addicted to prescription drugs combined with the curtailment of prescription drugs on the street has created an upsurge in heroin use. Heroin is a cheaper and a more readily available substitute for prescription drugs, especially opiates. In 2010, 2,350 individuals entered Minnesota treatment facilities for heroin addiction treatment.

Marijuana was the most commonly abused drug among those people who entered drug and alcohol treatment in 2010.  That same year, 9,543 people were admitted to treatment for marijuana addiction. 76.7 % of all those admitted for marijuana addiction treatment were males. The numbers of people who have entered drug rehabs for marijuana has risen slightly since 2000.

The number of people needing treatment for methamphetamine and amphetamines continues to increase though there are some variables. The overall increase is alarming. Starting in 2003, 1,022 people entered drug treatment for amphetamine addiction. Four years later during 2007, the number had jumped to 7,159 people admitted to treatment for substance abuse.

From 2004 to 2010 the number of people who entered treatment for opiate addiction other than heroin rose from 1,363 to 4,580. This is part of a national trend that all states are experiencing. The largest age group seeking treatment for other opiates was among the 21-25 year olds.

Minnesota Drug and Alcohol Fatalities, Injuries and Drug Court Statistics

  • The number of deaths related to drug use in 2007, the last year of the NSDUH, a government survey, was half the national average.
  • In 2007, 359 people died as a result of consequences from using drugs compared to the number of people, who died from motor vehicle accidents (618) or the people who died from firearm incidents (344).
  • In 2006, more men were arrested for driving while under the influence than women, with 68.7% men versus 22.3% women. The majority of those arrested for drinking while intoxicated were from the 20-24 age group.
  • The Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety, reported 38,635 arrests for DWIs in 2007. Though the figure had decreased slightly, it was above the national average.
