Rhode Island Addiction Treatment Statistics
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration reported 10,147 admissions for drug and alcohol addiction treatment in 2010. Of that number, 70.3 % were men and 29.7 % were women.
Alcohol & Drug Addiction Rehab Admission Statistics for Rhode Island in 2009
There are 60 alcohol and drug rehabs in Rhode Island but across all addictions unmet, treatment needs remain among the top 10 highest in the nation especially for the 18-25 year old group.
The number of people seeking drug and alcohol treatment with co-occurring psychological problems has risen drastically from 4.5% in 1992 to 26% in 2006.
Alcohol Addiction in Rhode Island
Since 1992, alcohol abuse treatment admissions have been on the decline from 53 % to 29 % in 2006, while drug only admissions have doubled from 21% to 46 % during the same time frame. Men comprised the majority of those who abused alcohol either as a primary drug or alcohol with a secondary substance.
Commonly Abused Drugs in Rhode Island
Rhode Island led the nation in a number of drug abuse categories. It ranked above the national average for illicit drug use in 2007, the last year of published results from the Office of National Drug Control Policy specifically ranking in the top fifth for drug use in the nation and ranking highest in heroin use followed by marijuana.
Cocaine
Rhode Island was among the states with the highest rates of cocaine use among three age groups: 12 -17, 18-25, and 26-30. In 2010, 869 people were admitted for cocaine addiction treatment.
Heroin
In 2010, 1,993 people were admitted to drug addiction treatment programs in Rhode Island for heroin.
Marijuana
The largest percentage of individuals treated for marijuana addiction was men. In 2010, 1,577 individuals entered substance abuse treatment for marijuana addiction. Rhode Island ranked among the state with the highest rate of marijuana use for all age groups.
Prescription Drugs
1,323 individuals went to treatment for the use of opiates other than heroin in 2010. 18-25 year olds led prescription drug abuse in Rhode Island.
Rhode Island Drug and Alcohol Fatalities, Injuries and Drug Court Statistics
Rhode Island ranks among the 18 states where there are more drug induced deaths than other causes of death. 142 people died due to drug use compared to 85 people who died in motor vehicle accidents and 37 people who died as a result of firearms in 2007.
Reports from the Department of Justice indicate that cocaine in Rhode Island is most commonly associated with violent crimes.
