Oklahoma Addiction Treatment Statistics
According to Treatment Episode Data Sets, in 2010 there were 16,932 people who went to drug and alcohol rehab in Oklahoma. 61.6% were men and 38.4% were female.
Rates of alcohol dependence or abuse in Oklahoma have typically remained at or below national rates for all age groups and across all survey years.
Rates of dependence on illicit drugs however, have generally remained at or above national levels. Of particular note is the rate of dependence on illicit drugs among those age 26 and older.
According to the 2006 National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services (N-SSATS), there were 176 drug and alcohol treatment facilities in Oklahoma. The number of treatment facilities in Oklahoma has increased from a total of 146 facilities in 2002 to 176 facilities in 2006.

Alcohol Addiction in Oklahoma
3,390 people went to treatment for alcohol abuse while an additional 3,304 people entered treatment for alcohol combined with a secondary drug in 2009.
Commonly Abused Drugs in Oklahoma
Drug abuse is a national epidemic and the numbers are continuing to rise. Heroin is becoming the cheaper replacement for opiates as states continue to crack down on the “pill mills” making the cost of opiates too expensive.
There were a reported 817 people who entered drug addiction treatment in 2009, for smoking cocaine and another 309 people who were admitted for ingesting cocaine by other means than smoking.
Marijuana
In 2009, there were 3,675 people who were admitted to treatment for marijuana dependence. 22.1% of those who entered treatment for marijuana addiction were aged 21-25.
Amphetamines
“Ice” or crystal meth is the principal drug threat coming from Mexico. There were 2,965 individuals who went to treatment for amphetamine addiction in 2009.
Prescription Drugs
During 2007-2008, Oklahoma ranked first among all states for the number of people using pain relievers for non-medical especially among persons age 12 and older.In 2009, 1,533 individuals went to drug rehab for opiates other than heroin. 51.8% were male and 48.2% were female.
Oklahoma Drug and Alcohol Fatalities, Injuries and Drug Court Statistics
As a direct consequence of drug use, 687 persons died in Oklahoma in 2007. This is compared to the number of persons in Oklahoma who died from motor vehicle accidents (743) and firearms (482) in the same year.
The number of meth lab seizure incidents in the state of Oklahoma increased 283% from 93 incidents in 2007 to 356 incidents in 2009.
Mexican drug trafficking organizations (DTOs) are the primary suppliers of wholesale quantities of methamphetamine, powder cocaine, commercial grade marijuana, and black tar heroin in the area. These DTOs use “cell heads” in Dallas and Oklahoma City to manage the wholesale narcotic distribution within individual markets.
The rate of drug-induced deaths in Oklahoma exceeds the national average.
